So let’s talk about AI tattoo designs for a little bit, because we get this question a lot lately. Do we use them if you bring one in? Here’s the real answer.

Normally, when we design a tattoo, we’re working off references, pictures you bring in, stuff you found on Google, whatever inspired the idea in the first place. AI is doing basically the same thing when it spits out a design, it’s just pulling from all over the web and mashing it together. The problem is that AI picture ends up with that AI look. You know the one. Skin that’s a little too smooth, shading that doesn’t make sense, proportions that are just slightly off in a way you can’t quite explain but your eye knows something’s wrong. A real artist can almost always do better with the same idea.

We’re not offended, honestly

Nobody here rolls their eyes when someone walks in with an AI generated image printed out. Most of the time, when we’re consulting with you, we’re basically trying to read your mind anyway, figuring out exactly what’s in your head so we can nail it down on skin. That AI picture actually helps with that. It gives us a jumping off point, a way to see what you’re drawn to, what style, what mood, what placement you’re picturing. That’s genuinely useful.

Where it falls apart

What doesn’t work is when someone wants the AI image copied exactly, line for line, shading and all. We’ve had folks come in saying ‘I want this tattoo exactly the way the AI made it,’ and honestly, we usually pass on those. Not because we’re precious about it, but because a lot of those images have real problems baked in. Shading in the wrong place. Depth that doesn’t translate to skin. Features and proportions that would look strange the second you actually put them on a body instead of a screen. AI just doesn’t have that stuff figured out yet, and it’s not really its job to. It’s a design tool, not a tattoo artist.

Use it as a starting point, not a blueprint

So bring it in. Seriously, bring in whatever inspired you, AI generated or not. It helps us understand the vibe you’re after and gets the conversation moving faster. But don’t expect any shop, including us, to mirror it exactly. The best tattoos come out of that back and forth between what you’re picturing and what actually works once it’s inked into your skin for the rest of your life. That’s true whether you found your idea on Google, in a magazine from twenty years ago, or generated it last night on your phone.
