So we get asked about this one a lot. Why is there a spot on our booking form asking for a photo of the actual body part you want tattooed. And I get it, some folks are bashful about that. Sending a picture of your leg or your back or wherever to a total stranger before you’ve even met us feels weird. But there’s real reasons behind it, and none of them have anything to do with judging you, because trust me, after 32 years behind the machine, there is nothing left that surprises me.

It’s About Placement and Flow

The first reason is placement. When we design a tattoo, we’re not just drawing something pretty and slapping it on. We’re looking at your actual musculature, the way your body moves, the way it curves, so the piece flows with you instead of just sitting on top of you like a sticker. That photo lets us design around your real body instead of guessing.

It Tells Us About Your Skin

The second reason is skin tone and melanin level. This one surprises people. Say someone comes in wanting a golden retriever done in full color. Depending on the skin type and tone, that color palette might not show up the way they’re picturing it. When we see that ahead of time, we can have an honest conversation and maybe steer things toward black and gray, or a different approach that’s actually going to look good on that particular skin instead of fading into nothing or looking muddy. That’s not us saying no to your idea, that’s us making sure the idea actually works once it’s on you.

Send Us Your Skin, Not a Random Google Photo

Here’s a mistake we see a lot. Someone wants their thigh tattooed, so they hop on Google, find a photo of a thigh, and upload that instead. I get why, but that does not help us. We end up designing around a stranger’s thigh from the internet instead of yours, and then the piece doesn’t sit right once it’s actually on your body. We need to see your skin, your shape, your tone, not a stock photo standing in for it.

Scars, Birthmarks, and Old Tattoos Matter Too

The photo also shows us anything else going on in that area, old scars, birthmarks, other tattoos nearby, stuff that might affect how the new piece needs to be designed so it works with what’s already there instead of fighting it. We’d much rather know about that stuff before you’re in the chair than discover it mid-session.

Nobody Here Cares What Your Body Looks Like

So if you’re filling out our booking form and you’re hesitating on that photo field, just know we’ve seen it all. Every body type, every skin tone, every scar, every weird tan line. Nobody in this shop is judging you for any of it. We just need to see the real thing so we can actually do our job right and get you the best tattoo possible. Filling that form out completely, photos and all, is honestly one of the biggest favors you can do for yourself before you ever sit down with us.
